DESCRIPTION

This vintage Persian Koliai rug from Kermanshah is a tribal village weaving featuring warm terracotta and garnet-red tonal layering structured through bold geometric medallion composition.

The field follows a Bazoubandi pattern arrangement, one of the most recognizable geometric systems within Kurdish weaving traditions of western Iran.

In this design tradition, the field is almost always woven on a camel-toned ground accompanied by complementary red, blue, and ivory tonal accents.

The central medallion anchors the composition with strong geometric clarity while the surrounding field maintains dense rhythmic tribal movement.

Deep wine and espresso-toned borders frame the warmer field and create concentrated atmospheric depth around the composition.

Within the border system appear Shamseh cartouche-like frames inspired by classical urban Persian carpet traditions.

These more refined urban decorative influences contrast subtly with the direct tribal geometry of the field and create layered visual character within the rug.

Floral motifs woven into the border soften the sharper geometric organization and introduce ornamental continuity around the composition.

The rug preserves slight tilt near the lower section, a characteristic often found in handmade village rugs and evidence of direct loom weaving rather than mechanical precision.

The medium pile height balances tactile softness with sharp visibility of the geometric structures.

The interaction between the camel-toned field, garnet-red geometry, deep border tones, and Shamseh framing creates warm Kurdish tribal atmosphere with unusually refined compositional balance.

This piece stands out for its Bazoubandi structure, urban-inspired Shamseh borders, and warm terracotta-garnet Kurdish palette.
