Shahsavan Kilims and Geometric Rugs from Ardabil Province

Located in northwestern Iran, Ardabil Province is a vital center for both handmade Persian rugs and tribal kilims. The region is home to the largest population of the Shahsavan nomads, whose weaving traditions are deeply rooted in the villages and towns surrounding the city of Ardabil.

Ardabil city itself is known for its finely woven geometric-patterned rugs, while surrounding areas are celebrated for their diverse kilim styles. The Meshkin Kilim (from Meshkin Shahr) is considered one of the most evolved examples of slit-weave kilims in Iran. The Soumak kilims (locally known as Soozani) from Parsabad Moghan are another prized tradition, featuring rich textures and complex motifs.

Other towns like Namin, Khalkhal, and Bileh Savar also contribute to the region’s kilim production, each preserving unique tribal patterns passed down through generations. Whether you’re searching for authentic Shahsavan kilims or geometric Ardabil rugs, this region offers some of the most distinctive and collectible pieces in the world of handwoven Persian textiles.
