Description

Kashan Rugs: From Golden-Age Masterpieces to Modern Decline

Kashan, a desert city in central Iran, is home to some of the most celebrated masterpieces in the history of Persian carpet weaving. From the Safavid era through the early Pahlavi dynasty, Kashan stood at the forefront of the industry—thanks to its skilled weavers, expert dyers, and visionary designers. It was here that curvilinear floral motifs such as eslimi and khata’i reached full artistic maturity, while urban angular designs—known as mohtasham-style—defined some of the finest carpets ever produced in Iran.

During this golden age, almost every woman in Kashan wove carpets, while men were involved in the surrounding trades: wool preparation, dyeing, pattern drafting, and loom-making. The city functioned as a full-fledged carpet ecosystem, producing museum-quality silk and wool rugs that today reside in major collections around the world.

However, the last 50 years have seen a steep decline. The quality of wool, dye, and most critically, the design integrity of Kashan carpets has diminished significantly. While production still exists, the artistic innovation and material excellence that once defined Kashan’s rugs have largely disappeared—a decline echoed in the city’s contemporary architecture as well.

Still, the antique workshop-woven carpets of Kashan remain icons of Iranian textile history, representing a period when the city was not just a center of craft—but of artistic leadership.
