Description

This large antique Persian Shahsavan kilim is a tribal flatwoven textile featuring deep berry, mauve, and wine-toned coloration arranged through dense layered geometric abstraction.
The kilim was woven in two separate narrow sections and later stitched together into a larger composition.
This construction method reflects the practical limitations of many nomadic tribal looms, which were often made narrower so they could be transported more easily during migration.
As a result, larger kilims were frequently woven in separate bands and later joined by hand.
The composition is built entirely from abstract Shahsavan tribal motifs arranged through rhythmic geometric repetition across the surface.
Despite the strong overall symmetry attempted by the weaver, small irregularities and asymmetries remain visible throughout the composition.
This happens because these kilims are traditionally woven from memory rather than from drawn cartoons or paper patterns.
The resulting structure preserves the direct handmade logic and improvisational balance characteristic of Shahsavan nomadic weaving traditions.
The layered geometric density creates visually complex tribal rhythm while the darker berry and wine-toned palette gives the kilim strong atmospheric depth.
The interaction between the stitched dual-panel construction, memory-based geometry, and deep tonal palette creates powerful artifact-like tribal presence.
This piece stands out for its two-panel nomadic construction, layered Shahsavan geometry, and deep berry-wine tribal palette.
