Description

This vintage Persian Meshkin kilim is a rustic tribal textile featuring muted apricot coloration structured through dense repeating abstract motifs and layered symbolic rhythm.

Across the field, a small figure-like motif repeats continuously in hypnotic sequence, creating strong directional movement and concentrated visual atmosphere.

Within Meshkin kilim traditions, these repeated motifs appear frequently and likely preserve traces of much older symbolic imagery whose original meanings have gradually faded over time.

The Meshkin region is home to the archaeological site of Shah Yeri, an ancient settlement estimated to be approximately 8,000 years old.

At the site, numerous carved stone figures stand throughout the burial grounds, locally referred to as “idols” or bot.

In some Meshkin kilims, these figure motifs appear in more explicit and recognizable form.

The resemblance between those ancient stone figures and the repeated abstract motifs woven into this kilim is difficult to ignore.

There is a strong possibility that these smaller abstract forms represent evolved and highly stylized descendants of the same ancient symbolic imagery.

A repeated floral border motif frames the composition and balances the dense rhythm of the central field.

Dusty pink tonal divisions surrounding the medallion area create striking visual separation against the softer apricot ground and become one of the most visually engaging aspects of the kilim.

The interaction between the archaeological symbolism, softened tribal palette, and repetitive geometric rhythm creates unusually contemplative and atmospheric tribal presence.

Woven in 1965, this kilim functions not only as a handmade tribal textile but also as a visual continuation of long-standing symbolic traditions rooted in the Meshkin region.

This piece stands out for its hypnotic repeated motifs, archaeological symbolic associations, and softened rustic tribal palette.
