Description

This antique Persian Afshar tribal rug from Kerman is a rare collectible weaving featuring a dark obsidian-toned field structured through dense boteh repetition and layered night-toned coloration.

The composition follows a vagireh arrangement in which boteh motifs repeat continuously across the entire field, generating concentrated rhythmic movement and tightly controlled geometric density.

The boteh forms remain highly stylized and tribal in execution, preserving the direct handmade character associated with older Afshar weaving traditions.

Within the borders, repeated leaf-like geometric motifs create secondary rhythmic framing around the denser field structure.

The rug carries a deeply atmospheric palette built from shadowed night tones, dark obsidian coloration, and softened tonal transitions.

Visible abrash variation moves subtly across the surface and creates rich shadow gradation throughout the composition.

Rather than producing bright visual contrast, the rug relies on restrained tonal depth and concentrated pattern density to create its luxurious atmosphere.

The interaction between the dark field, dense boteh repetition, and softened abrash transitions produces what could be described as a “lowlight luxury” visual character.

The pile remains low, allowing the dense geometric structures and repeated motifs to remain visually sharp and architecturally disciplined.

Woven around 1900, the rug carries strong aged tribal presence while preserving unusually refined compositional balance.

Examples of Afshar rugs combining this level of density, dark atmospheric palette, and collectible early weaving quality are increasingly uncommon.

This piece stands out for its obsidian field, dense boteh geometry, and rare night-toned Afshar tribal atmosphere.
