Description

This Baluch sofreh is a tribal textile combining flatweave and piled rug weaving techniques within a strongly contrasted composition.
The palette is centered on hot crimson red and jet black tones enriched by burnt orange accents, producing a saturated and dramatic tribal atmosphere.
The central section is woven in flatweave structure, while the surrounding borders are executed in piled rug weaving. This mixed construction distinguishes certain Baluch sofrehs from many other tribal sofrehs, which are typically woven entirely as flatweaves.
Among Iranian tribal weaving traditions, sofrehs are most commonly associated with Afshar nomads, followed by Baluch weavers, whose examples often differ significantly in both color palette and structural design.
One particularly striking detail appears along the left border, where a vivid bright woven line interrupts the darker composition. This deliberate use of sharp contrast through brightly colored yarn is a visual characteristic often associated with Baluch weaving traditions in eastern Iran.
The composition remains geometric and compact, with the contrast between flatwoven and piled sections adding further depth and textural variation.
Traditionally, sofrehs were woven for preparing bread dough or serving food, and their square format reflects these practical domestic functions.
This piece stands out for its unusual pile borders, dramatic color contrast, and highly expressive Baluch tribal character.
